WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO
WHO WE ARE:
THE DAVENPORT HOST LIONS CLUB is one of more than forty-six thousand Lions Clubs in one hundred and nine-two countries world wide. Members enjoy fellowship, develop leadership capacities and dedicate part of their free time to helping those in need in their communities, making them a better place to live. The Davenport Host Lions Club was organized on November 24, 1924. There were 51 Charter Members anxious to serve the community. The motto “We Serve” has been exemplified by the club since it was chartered.
WHAT WE DO:
At an early convention of the International Association of Lions Clubs, Helen Keller challenged our membership to become the “KNIGHTS OF THE BLIND.” Ever since that time the Lions Clubs everywhere have established projects to help the blind and to protect against loss of sight.
In 1955 the Eye Bank Program was started in Iowa, in conjunction with the University Hospitals in Iowa City. The Davenport Host Lions Club has been one of the leading financial supporters of this program to restore vision in Iowa.
When all of the area rivers and streams left their banks during the floods of 1993 and 1999, the Davenport Host Lions were there to help. Over $16,000 of flood relief in 1993 and $18,000 in 1999 was distributed to help those whose homes and property were damaged by the flood.

The Davenport Host Lions Club responded to the challenge of the SIGHT FIRST PROGRAM by being named a model club and raising $33,597.00 to be used in an effort to eradicate preventable blindness throughout the developing nations of the world.
Fifty million people in Africa have been treated for River Blindness.
Over 3.5 million cataract operations have been performed on the poorest of the poor.
One hundred fifty-four hospitals have been built or expanded to bring affordable eye care to millions of people without access to such care.
Glaucoma has been called the “sneak thief of sight” because it usually sends no warning signals.
Diabetic retinopathy similarly can rob people of their vision. The Lions Health Eye Program (LEHP) fights these two quiet thieves of sight in developing countries. The educational outreach program teaches the importance of regular dilated pupil eye exams.

Leader Dog Project
The Davenport Host Lions Club contributes significantly to the Leader Dog Puppie Program in cooperation with the North Central Correctional Facility in Rockwell City. Each puppy is under the direct care of one of the inmates who provides training and oversight 24 hours a day. It is reported that a puppy placed with an inmate in October 2005, now weighs 64 pounds. The handler bonds with the puppy and will express pride when the puppy is accepted into the Leader Dog Program.
