WELCOME to the SHEFFIELD, IA LIONS CLUB WEB PAGE
The Sheffield, IA Lions Club would like to WELCOME all Lions, friends and guests to our new web site.
The Sheffield Lions Club is a devoted and progressive group of volunteer men and women, chartered with Lions Clubs International, who devote their time and efforts in working to make Sheffield, North Central Iowa, the State of Iowa, the United States of America and the world better places to inhabit for every living and non-living substance. The Sheffield Lions do this through exemplifying the mission of Lions Clubs International of: "To empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions clubs."
Whenever a Lions club gets together, problems get smaller. And communities get better. That's because we help where help is needed – in our own communities and around the world – with unmatched integrity and energy.
The Lions Club name is derived by taking the first letter from each of the following words: LIBERTY, INTELLIGENCE, OUR NATIONS SAFETY (LIONS)
Our 45,000 clubs and more than 1.3 million members make us the world's largest service club organization.
We're also one of the most effective. We get the job done.
Lions Clubs members of the world recently:
Brought 3,000 volunteers together to build a playground for children of all abilities in California, USA.
Fed 60,000 people in a township in South Africa. It's something Lions do there every day.
Sent a team of eye surgeons to Honduras to treat more than 100 adults and children.
Everywhere we work, we make friends. With children who need schoolbooks, with seniors who need transportation and with people we may never meet.
We're led by talented, dedicated volunteer leaders from around the world. And, we're supported by the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), which helps to fund Lions humanitarian projects.
The Sheffield Lions encourage all visitors and guests to sign our website guest book, located near the bottom of this page. We also encourage you to visit our site often to become more familiar with the Sheffield Lions Club and what the Lions Clubs International does in general.
We meet the first Thursday of every month at the Sheffield Inn, 223 Gilman Street, Sheffield, Iowa. Our meetings start with a dinner meal beginning at 6:30 PM. If you are interested in learning more about Lions activities & programs and are interested in making the world a better place for all; PLEASE Join US!
Thank you!
LIONS MOTTO: "WE SERVE"
" The True happiness that Man has searched for since the dawn of humanity, that is the inner gold that awaits any person who holds compassionately the key of anonymous generosity. Do something for your fellow man, not for the gold, but for the love of Man, and you shall truly have the gold." -- unkown
LIONS CODE OF ETHICS
LIONS CLUBS OBJECTIVES

TO TAKE an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community.
TO UNITE the clubs in the bonds of friendship, good fellowship and mutual understanding.
TO PROVIDE a forum for the open discussion of all matters of public interest; provided, however, that partisan politics and sectarian religion shall not be debated by Club members.
TO ENCOURAGE service-minded people to serve their community without personal financial reward, and to encourage efficiency and promote high ethical standards in commerce, industry, professions, public works and private endeavours.
LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL'S 2010-2011 THEME:
Lions Clubs International Club's incoming International President - Sid L. Scruggs, III has chosen the theme of "A Beacon of Hope" for his 2010-2011 presidential year.
According to Scruggs, “If we could get 1.3 million Lions to recommit to service it would make a huge impact on the needs of people around the world. Our motto “We Serve” defines our mission, and is the core principle of our organization. This year, we are rededicating ourselves to service. Service will, in fact, be the focal point of my 2010-11 Presidential Theme. As people increasingly seek ways to volunteer, the time has never been better for Lions to shine a light on service. Hands-on service shines a light that directly touches people. We have seen it in practice and we have found through surveys and focus groups that “hands-on” service and direct contact with those we serve has become more important than ever before. People volunteer for many reasons, but mostly because they want to make a difference. They are questioning what is important in their lives and reassessing how they spend their time. They are turning to community service and other volunteer opportunities. We must value their time by ensuring it is used to make the greatest difference possible."
No better words may better summarize who WE ARE and our mission! Lions truly are "A BEACON OF HOPE".

SIGHT PRESERVATION AWARENESS INFORMATION FOR DIABETICS
Diabetic retinopathy, a common complication of diabetes, afflicts more than 5.3 million Americans. The condition occurs when abnormal blood vessels develop in the retina, eventually they cause bleeding, scar, formation and, finally, severe vision loss. "It's insidious and can come on without warning," says Dr. Chew.
Nearly half of those with diabetes develop some degree of diabetic retinopathy. "But if you tightly control blood sugar, you can reduce your risk or the progression of this eye disease by as much as 70 percent," Dr. Chew notes. Laser surgery and vitrectomy, which clears blood and debris from the eye, can help. If you have diabetes, you should get an dilated eye exam every year.

LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION LAUNCHES PUBLIC AWARENESS CAMPAIGN on SIGHT
Beginning in July and running through the fall, Lions Clubs International Foundation is raising public awareness of vision and also the Foundation through 1,000 billboard advertisements along roadways throughout the United States. The billboards encourage people to think about the importance of their vision while highlighting that saving sight is a primary initiative of Lions Clubs International Foundation. The billboards read: "Our Vision is that You Don't Lose Yours" and encourages the public to visit www.lcif.org/sight for more information. The artwork incorporates the recently updated look for LCIF and can be viewed at www.lcif.org. The campaign follows on a similar, successful billboard advertisment campaign by Lions Clubs International aimed at membership.
Lions Clubs International Foundation is the charitable arm of Lions Clubs International, the largest service club organization in the world with 1.35 million members in 206 geographic areas and countries. LCIF was ranked by a Financial Times' study as the number one non-governmental organization with which to partner. The LCIF SightFirst program, Lions’ flagship initiative, builds comprehensive eye care systems to fight the major causes of blindness and care for blind and visually impaired persons. Since 1990, the SightFirst program has helped restore sight to more than 30 million people around the world, having invested US$237 million in surgeries, the improvement of hundreds of eye care facilities and training of thousands of eye care professionals.
